Today is the last day of math in 2019 and the last day of math in this decade! We will be celebrating with a classic and fun math video and by playing a game or two as well. Over break there is no official homework, however the IXL strands below can be used to help students get a jump start on preparing for our next DCA (District Common Assessment), which we will be taking mid-January.
I enjoy working with our math class and wish you all a very happy break and New Year! I hope you are able to find time to unplug and enjoy some special time with family and friends. Thank you for your continual support around math learning! IXL Strands to Prepare for Upcoming District Common Assessment

In Unit 3 students learned how to compare and order fractions and decimals. In Unit 5 they will deepen their understanding by learning how a fraction can be decomposed (broken down) into smaller parts and added/subtracted to put together or take away some number of same sized parts. Students will extend this idea to adding/subtracting mixed numbers. We will be stretching beyond 4th grade to add/subtract fractions with different denominators, giving students opportunity to use their knowledge around equivalent fractions. Students will also stretch beyond and begin simplifying/reducing fractions. Other topics covered in Unit 5 include creating line plots with data involving fractional units, measuring angles, angle rotations, symmetric figures, and continuing to solve multi-step multiplication number stories. Students will be taking a pre-assessment, which will be used to guide instruction in Unit 5.

Mrs. Maddox is will be gone today, so students will be working with Mrs. Hamilton. Today's assignment will be completed during class and will be continued later this week (two-day open response problem solving). The end of unit math test will be taken on Tuesday. Students should have a reliable multiplication strategy to use for multi-digit problems, and be able to divide a complex figure (all right angles) into smaller rectangles to find the total area. There are IXL strands below for additional practice.

On Friday there is an all-school orchestra concert happening during our math block. Several students in our class will be preforming and the rest of us will be enjoying the concert in the audience. Math class will be very short, due to the concert. Students will complete a review on fractions and decimals and continue to practice using traditional multiplication for 2-digit by 2-digit problems. The end of unit math test will be given on Monday/Tuesday of next week.
