Hands on Equations - Lesson 4 "More Legal Moves"
Students will subtract the same number value from both sides of a balanced system. (Subtraction Property of Equality) Video Lesson 4: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtEXENE8oZU NO MATH CLASS ON TUESDAY 3/27 DUE TO JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VISIT Today's Warm Up on IXL - use the links, but remember to sign into your IXL account
A.1 Convert between standard and expanded form F.1 Prime and composite numbers F.6 Greatest common factor P.4 Find the order K.6 Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers S.3 Multiply money amounts: word problems S.4 Divide money amounts: word problems S.5 Price lists S.6 Unit prices S.7 Sale prices This week we will begin working on Algebra using Hands on Equations. Early success with algebraic concepts provides students with an intuitive and concrete foundation for later algebraic work. In Level 1 students will use blue pawns to represent an algebraic variable.
Lesson 1 (Tuesday) In any specific problem, all the blue pawns have the same value, and the scale is in balance when both sides have the same value. Students can solve for the pawn using trial and error and intuitive thinking. Lesson 2 (Wednesday) The pawn has a special name "x". Students will transform the equation into its physical representation, using the blue pawn for the x and the number cube for the number constant. The two sides of the equal sign become the two sides of the scale. Students use trial and error to find the value of x. Lesson 3 (Wednesday - Thursday) The legal move with pawns is introduced: we may remove the same number of blue pawns from both sides of a balanced system. Students apply the Subtraction Property of Equality to solve equations. On Thursday - Friday students will take a practice test to help prepare for the final DCA (District Comprehensive Assessment) of the school year, and/or pretest for 5th grade math (to help guide instruction - not graded) . Students looking for additional math practice should use Khan Academy or IXL (MN Standards for grades 4 or 5). Unit 12 test given on Tuesday & Wednesday (several students needed additional time to work, after Tuesday's class). No homework over spring break. Enjoy the time off! Pi Day is on Wednesday, March 14th (3.14). This is a great day to eat delicious pie while pondering the wonders of mathematical pi. Here is a Math Antics lesson on Pi: www.mathantics.com/section/lesson-video/circles-what-is-pi Study Link packet due on Monday, if it wasn't finished in class today.
Unit 12 Test will be on Monday. The following skills will be assessed:
IXL Practice - optional, but helpful in reviewing for the test Ratios & Rates (5th Grade IXL Strands) Factors (4th Grade IXL Strand) Place Values & Number Sense (5th Grade IXL Strands)Volume (5th Grade IXL Strands)Equations (4th Grade IXL Strands) We will be reviewing Unit 12 on Friday and plan to test on Monday. Please let me know if your child will be absent next week, for planning purposes.
